The mistake that can happen is Rooibos from South Africa that often is called ‘red tea’….
Rooibos is an herbal tea but should mostly be called ‘Rooibos’ or ‘Red BUSH tea’, and ‘red tea from China’ in the western countries is called ‘black tea’.
Confused?
Well, what we consider for ‘black tea’, the Chinese named it ‘red tea’ because they find that the tea brew is red in colour.
In the western countries we named after watching the dried leaves – and they are black…. SO in the western countries ‘black tea’ got its name from the dried leaves.
From now on, if you meet a Chinese person that asks for red tea, you can serve them a black tea 🙂
