Organic Hojicha

Emeyu’s organic Hojicha is of the highest quality and originates from a small family-run tea plantation in the city of Wazuka in the Uji area of Japan, who wins awards for their premium and high quality tea.

This Hojicha is powdered and is especially used for ‘Hojicha latte’.

What is Hojicha?

Hojicha means ‘roasted green tea’. The difference between green tea and Hojicha is that in green tea you want umami flavor and green tea leaves as the end result. Hojicha, the green leaves are roasted, which gives the red-brown color, also to the brew, and the taste changes during the roasting, which gives a chocolate, nutty and slightly caramel roasted profile.

How did Hojicha originate?

Hojicha was and is usually an everyday – loose leaf tea – that is offered to guests instead of water, both in restaurants but also in private homes. Each tea plantation has its own recipe for Hojicha, and origins from the Japanese principle ‘mottainai’ which means ‘nothing goes to waste’. Usually, it was the larger leaves that were left over after picking the tea bushes, that were roasted and used for the family and guests – so nothing was wasted.

 Is there caffeine in Hojicha?

Hojicha is low in caffeine as it is larger and more mature leaves from the tea bush, which is naturally low in caffeine.

How do you make your ‘Hojicha latte’?

You make your ‘Hojicha latte’ almost completely identically to ‘Matcha latte’.

You need your matcha bowl (chawan), bamboo whisk (chasen), measuring spoon (chashaku) and a strainer.

3 gr (2 scoops) Hojicha powder, 80 ml water, 80°C warm water and 1-2 dl oats/plant milk/milk.

  1.  Use the strainer to pour the Hojicha powder through into the cup. If necessary, use the measuring spoon to stir it through the strainer.
  2. Pour in the water and start whipping. Whip in M and W shape. After about 15-20 seconds, the drink has got a creamy foam on the surface.
  3. Pour the skimmed milk on top and you can enjoy your ‘Hojicha latte’.

We recommend oatmilk, but plantmilk or milk can also be used.
